Sally's 50th Birthday Party...

Working together with a venue and an out of town client we created a great party theme for Sally. Her favorite color was pink, and we ran with it. Ivana used the artwork that Carol designed for the table menus and placecards to make this beautiful sign for the hutch. She made a stencil out of foam core copying the rose and leaves from the artwork to watermark the sign...giving it that truly custom look.

Happy Birthday Sally!

Community Events...

During the fast pace of the holidays at Josephs Events, several of us took some time out to join three other area florists in a Floral Show at the Kildeer School District. Wednesday night we went to Twin Groves School, to participate and see our pieces raffled off for a great cause. We were to design and create 6 pieces of a variety of themes in front of the audience, as they watched and were educated on what we were doing and also product we were using.

Dan took a moss wreath from fall to festive holidays, showing how you can utilize items you have at home while changing up the wreath in minutes.

Jill created an amazing piece around a branch using all sorts of fall colors and flowers. There is so much to look at on this piece, don't miss any angle, make sure you look high and low on this one. This one is going to a lucky winner for sure.

Carol was working on a slightly different angle...incorporating her love for stationery into her floral pieces. Ivana made a foam core box that we put vellum artwork into the windows that was lite. Using the idea of the tall glass pillar candles she also wrapped that with the same artwork for extra glow.

Then we created a multi piece giveaway that could be used as a cluster or individual arrangements.

Also working with individual personal posies we designed three themes but using the same hydrangea mechanics and adding color appropriate for each theme. These would be set at each place setting for your guest to take home after your fabulous dinner party.

It was a great time, and a very successful first year for the Kildeer Floral Show.
Thanks for inviting us-

Echeveria

Echeveria is a succulent from the Crassulaceae family.

It's sometimes called Hen and Chicks, although several species go by this common name and it can be difficult to tell these succulent plants apart.

All echeverias grow in a rosette 2-6 inches (5-15 cm) across on short stems. The rosette has fleshy, blue-green leaves that become tinged with red when exposed to sun. Handle it with care because the leaves break off easily.

But did you know that if they do break off you can keep them in your home for several months unattended and no maintanenance?

These rosettes are showing up in all sorts of places now in the floral industry. They are used in wedding work as well as in an ornate rustic arrangements.

Double Nickels Birthday-

At Joseph's we juggle a wide variety of events. This one was a "top secret" birthday party in the city at the Wit Hotel. Invitations went out to our clients guests about 4 weeks ago, very custom sleeve-style invites were designed by Carol Woldhuis Designs. The artwork was created with elements that were meaningful to the client. The rest of the party theme snowballed from there....with LOTS of NICKELS everywhere.

The Cibomatto Lounge was transformed into a great red-glowing night club. Keeping the decor simple but trendy, was a great idea by our crew. Wanting to keep the theme and artwork of the invitations the prime focus, vellum sheets were printed and wrapped around 9 " pillar vessels, which created an amazing glow in the room. Once again we ran with the nickel theme and scattered thousands of nickel coins like confetti. Buckets of the clients popcorn were a great conversation snack for the guests attending.
Guests had options for a wine-tasting and education, scotch sipping, several food stations to explore while listening to dualing pianos and finally an all out DJ experience.

Don't forget...the nice thing about custom stationery is you can utilize the artwork in many ways. We created napkin artwork that was sent to Ar-En Parting Printing for our two sizes of silver napkins, but also had custom coasters created from the nickel art to tie it all in. We think of "EVERYTHING" at Josephs!

BUT the cake was a sure jaw dropper! We contracted Jaimee Corcoran with A Dash of Whimsy to create the Wrigley Field marquee that was used on the invitations. What an amazing job she did on this scrumptious rich dark chocolate cake layered with raspberry filling. Our clients were impressed beyond belief- Great job Jaimee! Make sure to check out all the detail...down to the nickels-

Happy Double Nickel Birthday Mike!

Sweet Posey

While wristlets have become more popular than the old fashion "pin-on" corsages these days, some women still prefer not to have anything interfere with the jewelry they so carefully picked out. Here is a sweet posey that one of our bride's mothers carried in a recent wedding.

FUN FACTS on corsages...

Overview

A corsage originally referred to the bodice of a woman's dress. Since a bouquet of flowers was often worn in the center of the bodice, the flowers took on the name "corsage." Our modern sense of the corsage comes from the French "bouquet de corsage," meaning "a bouquet of the bodice." Although the placement of the flowers might have changed, the name stuck and is still used to refer to any small bouquet of flowers worn on the body.

Types

Corsages are made from a small bunch of flowers or a single bloom. The corsage was originally worn at the waist or the bodice of a dress. Later, it became common to pin flowers to the shoulder or on a handbag. Corsages today may even be tied around a wrist, neck, ankle or worn in the hair.

Origins:The wearing of a corsage at weddings dates to the time of the ancient Greeks, who believed that the fragrances of flowers and herbs warded off evil spirits. Not only the bride but other females at the wedding held flower bouquets or attached them to their clothing.
Wedding Corsages
It is common to give a corsage to the mothers and grandmothers of the bride and groom. Smaller corsages may also be given to godmothers or other females who are important to the participants. A corsage is traditionally worn on the left, since it is closest to the heart.
Corsages for Dances
In the 20th century, it became common for escorts to present their dates with corsages, particularly for formal dances and proms. As women's dresses have changed to styles with spaghetti straps or no straps, it has become more common for women to wear the flowers on the wrist.
Mother's Day Corsages
Anna Jarvis spearheaded the development of an annual Mother's Day celebration in 1907. Since her mother's favorite flower was the carnation, it has become traditional to wear a carnation corsage on that day. According to FlowershopNetwork.com, florists promoted and made popular the custom of wearing a red carnation if one's mother was living, and a white carnation if one's mother had passed away.
Birthday Corsages
HappyBirthday.com recalls the "candy corsage," a popular tradition of the 1950s and '60s. A young girl might receive a "candy corsage" from her friends on her birthday. Decorated with candy such as lollipops, gum drops, tootsie rolls, bubble gum or lemon drops, such corsages were inexpensive to make and were held together with curly ribbon

Congrats Stephanie and Uriah-

Mulit event weekends have our crews in several places all at one time. Precise coordination is needed on weekends like this.

Side by side are trucks are being loaded. One going to the city and the other a few miles from the shop.

This one is headed to Cuneo Mansion and Gardens for Stephanie and Uriah's wedding on November 3, 2012. Floral trees were designed for this "garden feel" wedding, creating an interesting focal point to welcome your guests to their tables. Congrats Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Herr!

Congrats to Kim and Cam-

Kim and Cameron got married this past weekend at the Sofitel-Chicago and we were there to help!

A beautiful day in the city for a fall wedding. Our trucks were loaded with all that was necessary to tie all the floral decor together. South American green hydrangeas and Dendrobium Orchids were the flowers of choice. The ceremony took place in the ballroom, our crew laid a beautiful white double wide runner with a focal point of the city at the alter.

After the ceremony the guests enjoyed some cocktails and hors d'oeuvres in the foyer while the room was transformed by many. Tables were shuffled around, plates and purple chargers topped off the rich linens. Our team went into action with vessels of submerged orchids and up arrangements of candle lit willows sunk into a pillow of white and green hydrangeas, accented with 9 sprays of orchids to add a little purple touch. The venue added the pin spotting and uplighting to transform the room into a perfect setting for an evening of fun and dancing.

After finishing all the guest tables Jill moved to the cake, a beautiful white 4 tier cake got a few extra touches of flowers. Our job is done and another successful event by Josephs Events. Again Congrats to the happy couple Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Burrell. Thanks for letting us be a part of your special day!
